WHO IS EL RISITAS? HOW OLD, WHY DID IT DIE?
Joya was born on April 5, 1956 in Seville. He has worked in a number of jobs throughout his life, including cooking and unloading cement sacks.
His first appearance on television was on the TV program El Vagamundo in 2000, where Jesús Quintero interviewed his wife “El Peíto” or “el Cuñao” in a comedy tone about various life situations.
He became known for his shrill, wheezing smile (described in The Guardian as “a dolphin with 20 habits a day”), which made him known as “El Risitas” (Mr Giggles).
He also starred in the 2005 film Torrente 3: Protect the Hand. When he was internationally recognized around 2015, he also performed in companies outside of Spain, for example in a Finnish commercial.
In June 2007, Joya appeared on Jesús Quintero’s show Ratones Coloraos and recounted an incident while working as a kitchen janitor, describing how she left some paella pans (paellaras) to soak and clean in the ocean at night, and when she returned to pick up the pans in the morning, they poured into the sea with the tide.
He often divides the story with his distinctive laugh. The original video was uploaded to YouTube on June 25, 2007, and was viewed over a million times eight years before the meme became widespread.

Within a month of uploading, the video was viewed over five million times on YouTube. The memin effect was compared to parodies of the 2004 war drama Downfall, where several scenes from the film were similarly edited with fake subtitles.
It was broadcast in Slovakia in April 2015, parodying a political event known as the Vahostav affair, where Joya was subtitled by popular Slovak stand-up comedy artist Jano Gordulic. It was used in Great Britain to parody the Brexit decision in June 2016, and El Risitas was allegedly advising David Cameron in planning the Brexit campaign.
In 2019, a zoomed-in still image of his face named KEKW was added as a third-party expression for Twitch in FrankerFaceZ. As of April 2021, over 100,000 channels have activated emotes on Twitch. With over 250 million uses in chat, the emoticon ranks 10th among the most popular FrankerFaceZ emoticons.
HOW IS EL RISITAS, WHY DID IT?
On April 28, 2021, at noon, Joya was transferred from Hospital de la Caridad to the Universitario Virgen del Rocío Hospital after a sudden relapse of his illness. He died in the afternoon at the age of 65 from complications from his illness.
