Beauty Queen of Mexico arrested for kidnapping! Sentenced to 50 years in prison
Mexican Beauty Queen Laura Mojica Romero was arrested and sent to prison for being a member of a kidnapping ring.
The 25-year-old can face up to 50 years in prison if convicted.
Romero made a name for herself in her country, first wearing the Miss Earth Oaxaca 2015 crown. After Miss Oaxaca 2018 was selected at the regional beauty pageant held in Mexico, she wore the crown of the 2020 International Coffee Queen at the competition held in Colombia.
Romero’s crowned photos became popular on social media after she got a degree in beauty contests, and this time the ‘suspect’ photo taken at the police station was circulated. The photos released by Mexican prosecutors include footage of Romero and seven other suspects.
Romero, one of three women and five men arrested, was called only by her first name Laura, in a statement by investigators in the state of Veracruz in eastern Mexico. The statement described the beauty queen as “one of eight alleged members of a criminal organization specializing in kidnapping.”
While the kidnapping investigation continues, suspects, including Romero, have been detained for two months.
Model Romero described herself as “more than a pretty face” in an interview she gave in January 2019 following her Miss Oaxaca victory.
Romero, a business graduate, said his priority was to solve the problem of violence against women. Standing out for her fluent English at competitions, Romero was described as a spokesperson in the fight against breast cancer and leukemia in Mexico.
