Lee Jung-jae made history at the 74th Emmy Awards with Squid Game. The 49-year-old actor won this year’s award for best actor in a drama for his performance in the popular drama. With this success, Lee Jung-jae became the first Asian actor to win an award in this category.

Jung-jae took the win over tough rivals like Better Call Saul’s Bob Odenkirk, Ozark’s Jason Bateman, Severance’s Adam Scott, and Succession’s Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong.

In his award speech, Lee Jung-jae said, “Thank you to Television Academy, thank you to Netflix, and thank you to our director for bringing the realistic problems we all face to life on screen so creatively with a great script. Thank you, Squid Game team. Thank you to everyone who watched in Korea.” He then repeated his Korean speech.

Squid Game’s Seong Gi-hun became the fourth Asian actor to win any of the Emmy categories, and the first person to win a drama award for a role in a language other than English.

Squid Game began streaming on Netflix in September last year. The South Korean drama received a second season approval in June after its success. The drama’s director, Hwang Dong-hyuk, also won the best director award from his first Emmy nomination.

Squid Game received a total of 14 Emmy nominations this year and won four Emmys at the Creative Arts Emmy earlier this year. Most notably, actress Lee You-mi took home a golden statue for best guest actress in a drama series for her role as Ji-yeong.
