The famous surfer, who was preparing for the Olympics, died as a result of a lightning strike during training. Katherine Diaz, one of El Salvador’s well-known surfers, died after being struck by lightning while training. Diaz was aiming to participate in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, which will include surfing for the first time this summer.
The Salvador Surf Federation shared on its social media accounts, “A great athlete representing our country has passed away. See you soon, great warrior. El Salvador is in mourning.” The International Surfing Association has also issued a condolence message for Diaz.
It was reported that 22-year-old Diaz entered the water near her home in El Tunco to practice on Friday, and was later struck by lightning. Although the emergency service tried to bring herself back to life on the beach, it was not successful.
Spanish newspaper AS stated that the weather changed suddenly and she caught those on the beach off guard.
THE WORLD WAS PREPARED FOR SURFING GAMES
Diaz was preparing for the International Surfing Association World Surf Games, which would serve as a pre-qualifier for the Tokyo Olympics.
