Francis Ford Coppola’s nephew
Nicolas Cage, the nephew of veteran director Francis Ford Coppola, uses a different surname instead of his family name. The actor, whose full name is Nicolas Kim Coppola, was born in 1964. Born in a suburb of Los Angeles, Cage grew up in poor family conditions, especially due to the neglect of his mother, who was constantly suffering from depression. The actress, who finished school as soon as possible by hating school, first acted in short-term TV series. Cage, who had a small role in the 1982 movie “Fast Times at Ridgemont High”, thus took his first step into the cinema.
Cage starred in his uncle Coppola’s 1983 movie “Rumble Fish”. In the same year, the actress starred in the movie “Valley Girl”, which raised her to stardom, and starred in the movie “Peggy Sue Got Married”, directed by her uncle Coppola and starring Kathleen Turner.
He always managed to avoid studio films, media shows and Hollywood critics who preferred experimental performances. He acted with Cher in Norman Jewison’s “Moonstruck” (1987), which brought a new breath to the love films of the period.
Cage, who attracted the attention of the Coen Brothers with his performance in this film, appeared in the directors’ film “Raising Arizona”. The actress, who became increasingly famous with these two films, continued her debut with the 1990’s “Vampire’s Kiss” and the 1992’s “Honeymoon in Vegas”.
Cage, who has now become an actor who can earn as high as $4 million per movie, took a low wage role in Mike Figgis’ independent production “Leaving Las Vegas” (1995). He won the Oscar for Best Actor for his role as an alcoholic who decides to commit suicide.
City of Angels
Nicolas Cage, who changed his style with “City of Angels”, a romantic movie starring Meg Ryan and inspired by the famous German director Wim Wenders’ “Wing of Desire”, returned to action movies with the movie “Snake Eyes”. Cage, who directed the production of “Shadow of the Vampire” about the making of the silent horror movie “Nosferatu, A Symphony of Horror”, received $ 20 million for the 2000 production “Gone in 60 Seconds”.
Nicolas Cage: To innovate, you must break the rules
The Oscar-winning star of action movies, Nicolas Cage, is on the big screen with an unusual role in the movie “Pig”. Returning with awards from festivals with the film released on Friday, the actor spoke to Barbaros Tapan.
Oscar-winning Hollywood star Nicolas Cage is in front of the audience this time with the independent film “Pig”. Cage, who made a name for himself with his acting as Rob, who hunts truffles with his pig, was faced with a different challenge this time. Brought from a pig farm in Oregon, her ‘co-star’ named Brandy had no acting experience and often bit the actress. Cage told the director, “I’ve been burned for the role, thrown out of vehicles, nothing happened, but I think I’m going to die from a pig bite.”
I want to talk about your approach to acting. You have created many memorable characters. What kind of work is there after what seems like a completely natural performance?
I’m glad you asked this. First of all, I would seek to get out of naturalism and find a more exaggerated way of behaving. As in the Japanese theatrical art ‘Kabuki’. If we take the highest level behavior of people… For example, when faced with mental illness, alcoholism, drug addiction or great tragedies, I would like to find the mechanisms of real emotions and strange behaviors in the character. Because there is “truth” behind it. There is sincerity. For example, it has to be really wild, not wild just for the sake of brutality. I think I have to have the real feeling of someone who has this character.
You mentioned earlier works of art that inspire you. I would like to know what are the inspirations of some characters
What you can do in one art form, you can probably do it in another. And if you accept film performance as an art form, then this concept of art synchronicity applies. For example, when I did “Wild at Heart,” people thought I was impersonating Elvis. But the truth is, I had more of an Andy Warhol approach to this character. Because what Warhol was going to do was take these incredible icons and make amazing collages out of them. Stanislavski used to say that the worst thing an actor can do is cheat. I read Stanislavski’s book and followed his program.
But at the same time, being a bit of a rebel, I wanted to see if we could break our form with this, because sometimes you have to break the rules to come up with new things. When I went to David Lynch and said, “I have an idea,” I found the snakeskin jacket my character Sailor was wearing in a secondhand store. Sailor is that kind of outlaw type, 50s style guy. He’ll probably channel Elvis as an idol who will somehow help him get through everything he’s struggled with. And David wrote that beautiful line, “This jacket is a symbol of my faith, personal freedom and individuality”. It was all because of the inspiration I got from Warhol. And that came out of the idea of how to bring his presentation to a movie performance.
Have you done this with other characters?
Judging by the transformation scene in “Ghost Rider”… I’m a huge fan of Edvard Munch. His painting “The Scream”… I was trying to figure out how to incorporate this into a movie performance and I used it for the transformation scene. These are just small examples of what I think in terms of the idea of art synchronicity.
There is no one who does not remember the 1997 movie “Face/Off”. Nicolas Cage’s character died in the original movie, but there will be a sequel that will resurrect the “Face/Off 2” character.
Oscar winner Nicolas Cage has recently taken over the cinema once again with a series of critically acclaimed hits: “Mandy”, “Pig”, and “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent”. And now Cage’s name is on the agenda again for the upcoming “Face/Off 2”.
“Godzilla vs. Kong” director Adam Wingard is preparing a script for the sequel to John Woo’s 1997 action classic starring Nicolas Cage and John Travolta as a gangster and police officer. “We’re really working on it,” Wingard told Empire magazine. “We’re not going to share it until everybody says, ‘That’s it.’ We saw it as a Nicolas Cage movie. Now, Nicolas Cage is one of the hottest actors in Hollywood again.”
Work on the film, which will come 25 years later, began last year. Details of “Face/Off”, which participated in the sequel, are kept secret, but it was shared with the public that there was a difficult script writing process.
