During Sony’s PlayStation Showcase, the official trailer for God of War: Ragnarok, the sequel to 2018’s God of War, was released. In a small part of the trailer, a character using a hammer was introduced to the players.

Shortly after the reveal, it was confirmed that the character briefly appearing in the trailer is actually the Norse God Thor.

Players who played God of War in 2018 know that the cutaway shown in the trailer is actually shown at the end of the game. The snippet shown at the end of the game reveals the meaning that Kratos will fight against the Lightning God in the sequel.

Introduced on Twitter by Sony Santa Monica Art Director Raf Grassetti, Thor’s appearance is more reminiscent of Norse mythology and folklore than the muscular god we know from the Marvel universe.

In a developer interview following the PlayStation Showcase, God of War: Ragnarok’s Director Eric Williams revealed the character introduction and the voice in the gameplay trailer of Thor. The Lightning God will be voiced by Ryan Hurst, who plays Opie Winston in Sons of Anarchy.

Williams described the Lightning God in the play as “Thor will be a big, burly, hedonistic boy in this game, a little more unstable than the public knows.” We only know about Odin’s son that he greedily killed “giants” and, according to myths, defeated the Earth Serpent. But it’s pretty clear that Thor will play a big role in Ragnarok.

God of War: Ragnarok is currently scheduled for release in 2022, although the game’s official release date has yet to be announced.
